Is your computer acting up? Machines rarely die without warning — they complain first. This guide highlights the key signs that indicate your computer needs professional repair, and which ones mean you should stop using it immediately.
1. It takes forever to start — and gets worse weekly
A healthy machine reaches the desktop in under a minute. If boot times keep creeping up despite restarts and updates, the usual culprits are a failing hard drive, a stuffed startup list, or malware running in the background. A dying drive is the urgent one: back up your files today, not this weekend.
2. Strange noises, smells or serious heat
Grinding or clicking from a laptop, fans screaming at full speed on an empty desktop, or a hot-plastic smell are all hardware distress signals. Clicking in particular can mean a hard drive’s days are numbered — power down and bring it in rather than hoping it passes.
Quick check you can do safely
Feel the air from the vents. Weak airflow plus high heat usually means dust-clogged cooling, which is a cheap fix if caught early and a dead processor if ignored for months.
3. Crashes, blue screens and frozen apps
The odd crash happens to everyone. Daily crashes, screens of solid color, or freezes that need a hard power-off point to failing RAM, a corrupt system, or an overheating chip. Write down any error codes you see — they save diagnosis time.
4. Pop-ups, new toolbars and a hijacked homepage
If your browser opens pages you didn’t ask for, the search engine changed itself, or “system warnings” demand you call a number, you’re infected. Don’t enter passwords or card details on that machine until it’s cleaned — call it quarantine and let a technician disinfect it.
5. The battery dies in an hour — or bulges
Batteries wear out; two to three years is normal. But a trackpad that clicks oddly, a laptop case separating at the seam, or a battery that swells means stop using it now — swollen lithium batteries are a fire risk. We replace them same-day.
When to bring it in
- Any clicking, grinding, burning smell or swelling — immediately.
- Daily crashes or a machine that won’t boot — this week.
- Gradual slowdowns and short battery life — before they become the items above.
Diagnosis at Boltbench is always free, and most of these faults are same-day fixes. The cheapest repair is the one you get early.
