In today’s digital age, cyber threats are a constant concern for businesses. The good news: most attacks on small companies aren’t sophisticated heists — they’re automated scans finding the same five open doors. This blog explores practical steps you can take to close them.
1. Update everything, automatically
Unpatched software is the single most common way in. Turn on automatic updates for operating systems, browsers and office apps on every machine — including the laptop that lives in someone’s bag. One forgotten device can be the door.
2. Back up like your business depends on it
Because it does. Ransomware only works when the victim has no clean copy of their files. Follow the 3-2-1 habit: three copies of important data, on two different kinds of storage, with one copy offsite or in the cloud — and test restoring occasionally.
3. Passwords: a manager plus two-factor everywhere
Reused passwords turn one breach into ten. Give every staff member a password manager and require two-factor authentication on email, banking and cloud storage at minimum. It stops the vast majority of account takeovers cold.
The five-minute email audit
Check who has access to your company email, social accounts and banking today. Remove ex-staff, unknown devices and old forwarding rules. Attackers love forgotten access.
4. Secure the Wi-Fi properly
Your router still has its factory password, doesn’t it? Change the admin login, use WPA3 (or WPA2 at minimum), set up a separate guest network for visitors, and keep business devices off public hotspots without a VPN.
5. Train people on the one trick that matters
Phishing — fake invoices, “CEO” requests, parcel redelivery texts — causes most breaches. Teach one rule: verify unusual requests through a second channel before paying or clicking. A thirty-second phone call defeats a month of attacker planning.
